This program examines these crucial issues, nation-building, globalization, and decolonizing the mind, from the perspectives of the new democracies of southern Africa. Namibia won its independence in 1990 after decades of apartheid under South African colonization. South Africa had its first democratic election in 1994. As these nations struggle to build nationhood and deal with the legacies of apartheid and colonialism, they are faced with the challenges posed by today's world: rapid globalization and under and unequal development. Decolonizing the mind is a long-term project.
Social Change and Development in Southern Africa
The Summer Internship Program: Social Change and Development in Southern Africa provides students with an opportunity to learn about contemporary and historical issues impacting development and social change in Southern Africa and the efforts to address these issues. Students will learn through course study as well as attachment with a local organization dealing with education, community development, health, or social change. Internship field placements will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities, as well as opportunities for personal and professional development. Charismatic African mega fauna can be observed as well as large numbers of birds, reptiles and some amphibians.
