Description

The experiences you will have on your overseas radiography elective placement are likely to be somewhat different from those you are used to in your domestic clinics and hospitals.  In many of our destinations the institutions we work with are greatly under-resourced and radiography equipment is considerably less hi-tech than back home.  These are placements which will really test your skills, abilities and also your emotions!  In such areas you may see diseases and conditions which are completely new to you.  In addition to this you will generally find that all pathologies are in more advanced stages, as patients often tend to present much later than they do in wealthier countries.

Over the years we have been operating we have established great working relationships with many hospitals and radiography specialists across our destinations.  This means that you will be able to choose from a range of hospital departments and different radiography specialties.  If your elective period lasts for more than four weeks, you can choose to split your placement across hospitals or join one of our Add-on projects (see below).

Our placements take in a variety of different elements of both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography, working with x-ray, CT, ultrasound, MRI and fluoroscopy.  We have placements in large regional hospitals, private clinics, teaching hospitals and specific radiography schools.  If you spend more than four weeks away with us, we may be able to split your placement across hospitals, or regions, to give you a broader view of healthcare in your chosen country.  Please check our individual destination pages on the right side of this page to learn more about available areas of specialty within each country.  And remember that if you wish to pursue a specialty which isn't mentioned here, you can always get in contact with us to find out if it may be possible.

All our radiography elective students are designated a preceptor/supervisor who will be their main point of contact.  We ensure that this person is a senior member of the department that you are working in, and that they understand what you expect from your placement.  Just as importantly, we also inform them of what they can expect from you!  And we appreciate that your school is often likely to have a number of requirements of this individual, so it is therefore important that you communicate this to us, in the pre-departure period.

Highlights

* Food, Accommodation and Local Staff
Everybody who signs up on our radiography elective placements stays in one of our Work the World houses.  These are large, conveniently located habitations which you share with other healthcare students from our radiography, medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery and physical therapy programs.  We are justifiably proud of all our premises, which are "student houses" in name only!  Each one is maintained by a housekeeper who keeps it neat and tidy at all times, and we also have a caterer whose job is to ensure the house is well-stocked with food and drinking water at all times, as well as providing all students with breakfast and dinner throughout the working week.

* Safety and Security
Our local staff teams work incredibly hard to ensure that all aspects of your time away with us run as smoothly as possible.  In the prelude to your trip we put a great deal of effort into planning the placement, keeping you informed of everything you need to know and answering any questions that you may have.

Once you actually arrive in a destination you will be met from the airport and brought to the local Work the World house, where you will meet our other students.  When you have recovered from the journey you will be given a full introduction to the local area, including how to get around (on foot and using public transport), where to withdraw cash or change traveler's checks, the location of the nearest internet cafes, and anything else that you need, or may wish, to know!

The following day you will be taken to your placement, introduced to your supervisor and your colleagues, and taken through all the important documentation and information that is required.  After this you will start your elective placement in earnest, but our staff will always be available to deal with any problems that you have.  In fact, you will find them a continuous, supportive presence throughout your time away with us!

We aim to give you all the information and guidance that you require in order to feel safe and secure when you are going about your daily life at the hospital or clinic in which you work, and likewise while you are out in the local area.  Then, when you are back at the Work the World house, we want you to see it very much as a safe haven, which is why we take steps to ensure we maintain high health & safety standards, and will not hesitate to employ additional security measures where we deem them appropriate.

* Free Time and Travel Opportunities
We understand that an international elective is not simply about working in a different radiography setting; there is a whole new world out there and you are going to want to explore!  Fortunately Work the World houses are often full of similar people so you shouldn't have any trouble finding traveling companions - if you want them - whether that on weekend trips or an extended period of travel once you've completed your radiography placement.  And the fact that you have this ready-made community of students within the house means that you really don't need to worry if you are flying out to our destinations alone; you will soon have a group of friendly people around you!

If you are interested in doing a bit of sightseeing, our local staff will be able to provide you with information, and often contacts, to assist you in planning out where you want to go and what you want to do.  Also don't forget to ask other students in the house who have been there for longer than yourself; you will find that the continuous turnover we have in each house means that current residents are an amalgam of past knowledge and experiences!

* Add-on Experiences
Our Add-on placements vary from destination to destination, but all are intended to provide our students with a broader elective experience, whether that is of the local healthcare system such as our Village Experiences in Africa - or the local culture like the Yoga Course in India or the Intensive Spanish Course in Argentina. Full information on the available options can be found in the specific destination pages.

What is included in a Work the World elective placement?
Work the World is the leading provider of international elective placements for a whole host of reasons. The quality of our service is certainly one of them the sheer number of happy returned students has enabled us to build an unrivaled reputation within universities and healthcare institutions around the globe. But probably the main reason is - and has always been simply the strength of the basic package that we offer.

We understand that organizing an international elective placement takes time and this is the one thing that healthcare students dont usually have in any great supply. We appreciate that arranging accommodation can be a massive hassle and that factoring in the costs of this, your meals, and a continual supply of safe drinking water means you can quickly find yourself going over budget, which just adds to the stress. And we know what is like to arrive in a foreign destination, without any clue what to do, where to go, or how to go about even asking for answers to these questions!

This is why all Work the World elective placements include the following:

- A well-organized, structured placement
- All accommodation, food and drinking water
- An extensive support network both at home and abroad

In addition to this you will benefit from:

- Flexible start dates and placement lengths
- A comprehensive online information system My Trip
- Being part of an international community of students

* Your placement
Once you have applied, the staff in our head office will be in touch with you to determine exactly what it is that you are hoping to get from your elective experience what area of specialty you are interested in, what kind of hospital or clinic you would like to work in, etc. We then liaise with the staff in our destination countries who thanks to the strong links they have forged with local institutions - will be able to arrange a placement which matches your requests.

They will provide you with a designated clinical supervisor, who will act as your main point of contact with the hospital or clinic, both before and during your placement. As part of their role, this supervisor will provide you with an elective experience suitable to your skills, experience and the confidence they have in your abilities, as well as providing your university with any administrative information which they might require.

* Accommodation
The Work the World houses consistently turn out to be the highlight of many of our students trips. We really go out of the way to make them something special this is the place where you will be spending a great deal of your time, after all! As well as comfortable bedrooms and large communal spaces they each have a housekeeper who will keep the whole place clean and tidy for you. This provides you with a great environment in which you can truly feel at home, and enjoy the company of your fellow housemates.

* Food and Drink
We employ caterers in all of our houses, who prepare breakfast and dinner for everyone throughout the working week. Their brief is to provide a variety of meals, from traditional local dishes to international favourites. Of course they are restricted by the ingredients which are locally available, but they will certainly make sure that what you are given is delicious and nutritious, and they can cater for most dietary requirements (just ask if you arent sure!). They also keep the house stocked full of food in order that you can prepare yourself a packed lunch during the week, any meals that you are around for over the weekend, and snacks when you get peckish! Finally they keep a steady supply of drinking-water available at all times.

* Support Network
Before you leave the country you will be in contact with our head office staff, who are responsible for preparing you for your trip - telling you everything that you need to know. They will be able to answer any questions that you have, or else be able to find out the answers and get back to you with them promptly! They are not trained healthcare workers, but they dont have to be they are expert organizers who have lived in, worked in or travelled across our destinations, and know them inside out!

Once youve arrived in your destination you will meet our dedicated overseas staff. These are the guys who are the heartbeat of Work the World. From the moment that you arrive in the airport, train-station or bus-station they will be there to meet you and take you over to the Work the World house. The will provide you with an orientation of the local area, take you to your placement on the first day and generally help you with anything that you need to know. There will always be at least one staff member around the house throughout the day and they are contactable by phone 24/7 if you have any problems.

* Flexibility
Work the World elective placements can be easily fit into any period of time that you have available. Although we ask you to arrive on either a Saturday or a Sunday, you can select from any weekend in the entire year! You can also choose exactly how many weeks you want to do your placement for, and if you want to split your placement across two different countries then we will even give you a discount!

* Language Lessons
We provide free local language lessons to the students, in all of our destinations except Argentina. These take place in Work the World houses during the evenings. They are a great way to get to know your fellow housemates, while picking up some useful words and phrases, which will greatly enhance your elective placement experience. You can learn Fante in Ghana, Malayalam in India, Nepali in Nepal, Sinhala in Sri Lanka and Swahili in Tanzania!

* My Trip
All our elective students are provided with their very own online information system called My Trip, which can be accessed from our homepage. It is packed full of information about your destination country and placement, and will guide you through everything that you need to know and do before you leave.

* Work the World Community
Having all our elective students living under the same roof creates a wonderful community of friendship and support, which exists in all of our destinations. And with our staff working - and sometimes living - at the same site, they are able to foster this still further by providing weekly barbeques, or simply advising you on the best places to visit, in the local area and further afield. The fact that this community exists means that it is easy for individuals to join our elective programs although you may have to travel out with us alone, there will be plenty of friendly faces to greet you once you arrive, and there is bound to be a group of likeminded people for you to join if you want to do some traveling at the weekends, or after your placement has come to an end.
