Description

The role of pharmacists can be significantly different in the regions we work compared to back home. For this reason we have developed a program encompassing time spent in the dispensaries of regional and district hospitals as well as ward rounds with senior medical consultants, assessing patients and consulting with other healthcare students and hospital staff. The focus of these placements is to give participants a solid grasp of the provision of care whilst encountering unfamiliar cases and treatment.

Highlights

* Food, accommodation and local staff
Everyone who joins our elective placements stays in a Work the World house. These are conveniently-located, sizeable residencies which you will share with other healthcare students from our physical therapy, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, radiography and medicine programs. The fact that we place everybody under the same roof is a great aspect of our service; it means that - even if you are traveling with us on your own - you can be sure you will have a ready-made community of friendly faces waiting for you when you arrive.

We are justifiably proud of these premises, which are "student houses" only in name; each one is maintained by a housekeeper who keeps it clean and tidy at all times, and we also have a caterer whose job is to ensure the fridge and pantry are always well-stocked with food and drinking water, as well as providing all students with delicious, nutritious meals throughout the working week.

* Safety and security
Our staff teams around the world work extremely hard to ensure that all aspects of your time away with us run as smoothly as possible. In the build-up to your trip we put great emphasis on planning out the logistics of the placement, ensuring you have all the information you need to know, and being available to answer any questions that you have.

Once you arrive in the country our local staff will meet you at the airport, bring you to the local Work the World house, and introduce you to the other students. Once you have freshened-up you will be taken on a full orientation of the local area, including how to use public transport, where to withdraw cash and change traveler's checks, the location of the best internet cafes, and anything else that you wish to know!

On the first day of your placement you will be shown how to get to your hospital or clinic, introduced to your supervisors and other relevant staff members, and taken through all the important documentation and information. After this you are free to start your elective in earnest, but our local staff will always be on-hand to handle any issues that you may have, and you will find them a continuous, supportive presence throughout your time away with us.

Our aim is to give you all the information and guidance that you require in order to feel safe and secure when you are going about your daily life at the hospital or clinic in which you work and out in the local area. While you are in the Work the World house we want you to see it very much as a safe haven, which is why we take steps to ensure we maintain high health & safety standards, and we do not hesitate to employ additional security measures where we deem them appropriate.

* Free time and travel opportunities
We understand that an overseas elective is not simply about practicing physical therapy in a different setting; you are also going to want to explore! The good news is that Work the World houses are often full of like-minded students, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding traveling companions, whether that be on weekend trips or for an extended period once you have completed your elective.

Our local staff will be able to provide you with travel information and even contacts, who may be able to assist you in planning out where you are going to go and what you are going to do. Don't forget to ask other students in the house; you will find that the continuous turnover we have in each house means that current residents are a veritable encyclopedia of past knowledge and experiences!

* Add-on experiences
Our Add-on placements vary from destination to destination, but all are intended to provide our students with a broader elective experience, whether that is of the local healthcare system such as our Village Experiences in Africa, Ayurvedic Medicine in Sri Lanka or the Intensive Spanish Course in Argentina. Full information on the available options can be found in the specific destination pages.

What is included in a Work the World elective placement?
Work the World is the leading provider of international elective placements for a whole host of reasons. The quality of our service is certainly one of them and the fantastic level of feedback from students has enabled us to build an unrivaled reputation within universities and healthcare institutions around the world. We think that the main reason is and and has always been simply the quality of the tailored placements that we offer in our destinations.

We understand that organizing an international elective placement takes time and this is the one thing that healthcare students don't usually have in a great supply! We appreciate that arranging a placement in overseas hospitals can be a huge task. Organizing your accomodation, factoring in the costs this, your meals and a continual supply of safe drinking water means you can quickly find yourself going over budget, which just adds to the stress. We know what is like to arrive in a foreign destination, without a clue what to do, where to go, or how to go about even asking for answers to these questions!

This is why all Work the World elective placements include the following:

- A well-organized, structured placement
- All accommodation, food and drinking water
- An extensive support network both at home and abroad

In addition to this you will benefit from:

- Flexible start dates and placement lengths
- A comprehensive online information system My Trip
- Being part of an international community of students

* Your placement
Once you have applied, the staff in our head office will be in touch with you to determine exactly what it is that you are hoping to get from your elective experience what area of specialty you are interested in, what kind of hospital or clinic you would like to work in, etc. We then liaise with the staff in our destination countries who thanks to the strong links they have forged with local institutions - will be able to arrange a placement which matches your requests.

They will provide you with designated clinical supervisors, who will act as your main points of contact within the hospital or clinic, both before and during your placement. As part of their role, your supervisors will provide you with an elective experience suitable to your skills, experience and the confidence they have in your abilities, as well as providing your university with any administrative information which they might require.

* Accommodation
The Work the World houses consistently turn out to be a highlight of many of our students' trips. We really go out of the way to make them something special; this is the place where you will be spending a great deal of your time after all! As well as comfortable bedrooms and large communal spaces they each have a housekeeper who will keep the whole place clean and tidy for you. This provides you with a great environment in which you can truly feel at home and enjoy the company of your fellow housemates.

* Food and drink
We employ caterers in all of our houses, who prepare breakfast and evening meals for everyone throughout the working week. Their brief is to provide a variety of meals, from traditional local dishes to international favourites. Of course they are restricted by the ingredients which are locally available, but they will certainly make sure that what you are given is delicious and nutritious, and they can cater for most dietary requirements (just ask if you arent sure!). They also keep the house stocked full of food in order that you can prepare yourself a packed lunch during the week, any meals that you are around for over the weekend, and snacks when you get peckish! Finally they keep a steady supply of drinking-water available at all times.

* Support network
Before you leave the country you will be in contact with our head office staff, who are responsible for preparing you for your trip - telling you everything that you need to know. They will be able to answer any questions that you have, or else be able to find out the answers and get back to you with them promptly! They are not trained healthcare workers, but they dont have to be they are expert organizers who have lived in, worked in or travelled across our destinations, and know them inside out!

Once you've arrived in your destination you will meet our dedicated overseas staff. From the moment that you arrive in the airport, train-station or bus-station they will be there to meet you and take you to the Work the World house. The will provide you with an orientation of the local area, take you to your placement on the first day and generally help you with anything that you need to know. There will always be at least one staff member around the house throughout the day and they are contactable by phone 24/7 if you have any problems.

* Flexibility
Work the World elective placements can be easily fit into any period of time that you have available. Although we ask you to arrive on either a Saturday or a Sunday, you can select from any weekend throughout the year! You can also choose exactly how many weeks you want to do your placement for, and if you want to split your placement across two different countries then we will even give you a discount!

* Language lessons
We provide free weekly local language lessons to the students, in all of our destinations. These take place in Work the World houses. They are a great way to get to know your fellow housemates, while picking up some useful words and phrases, which will greatly enhance your elective placement experience. You can learn Fante in Ghana, Nepali in Nepal, Sinhala in Sri Lanka, Spanish in Argentina and Swahili in Tanzania!

* My Trip
All our elective students are provided with their very own online information system called My Trip, which can be accessed from our homepage. It is packed full of information about your destination country and placement, and will guide you through everything that you need to know and do before you leave.

* Work the World community
Having all our elective students living under the same roof creates a wonderful community of friendship and support, which exists in all of our destinations. With our in-country staff working - and sometimes living - at the same site, they are able to foster this still further by providing weekly barbeques, or simply advising you on the best places to visit, in the local area and further afield. The fact that this community exists means that it is easy for individuals to join our elective programs although you may have to travel out with us alone, there will be plenty of friendly faces to greet you once you arrive. There is bound to be a group of likeminded people for you to join if you want to do some traveling at the weekends, or after your placement has come to an end.
