Founded in 1852, the Universite Laval is the oldest French language university in America and the center for Quebec's largely francophone culture. Due in part to active exchange programs with universities around the world, it has an international student population close to 2000 and a total student population close to 35,000.

WMU Student Program: After arrival, students participate in a five-day introductory course on Quebecois History and Culture, followed by a four or five-week French course. The course on Quebecois History and Culture is taught by WMU Professor Dr. Vincent Desroches, and the French course is taught by professors in the ecole des langues.

Highlights

Quebec City is the provincial capital, located at the convergence of the St. Lawrence and St. Charles rivers, in the core of French Canada. This major industrial, cultural, service, and tourist center has a rich history and is a delightful blend of both New and Old World culture. The "Lower Town" is built on the waterfront and the "Upper Town" is situated on Cape Diamond, a bluff rising 300 ft (91 m) above the St. Lawrence River. Winding, narrow streets link these two sections of the city. The Quebecois are a warm and friendly people, full of energy and creativity to match their vast surroundings, and proudly attached to the language and culture that make them unique in many ways. The surrounding area offers many notable sights, such as Montmorency Falls, the Ile d'Orleans, and the shrine of Ste Anne de Beaupre. Also, the Summer Festival in Old Quebec during the month of July attracts hundreds of singers and musicians from around the world.

Western Michigan University's Mission Statement

Haenicke Institute for Global Education, established by the Board of Trustees in 1998, promotes and supports efforts towards globalization and internationalization of the academic environment of Western Michigan University. The Institute works closely with the International Education Council of the WMU Faculty Senate, as well as with international education committees and projects within and across colleges.
