The city of Bristol is a thriving, beautiful, modern city, where the arts flourish with opera, film, ballet, theater, and more. USAC students who study at Bristol are full members of the University Union and can participate in the over 150 clubs and societies on campus and in the activities the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences organizes each semester.
Highlights
Today Bristol is a thriving, beautiful modern city of some 320,000 inhabitants and a major financial and industrial center in which British Aerospace and Rolls Royce combine to form the biggest aerospace complex in Western Europe. Reminders of the city's past are found along the narrow streets of the old city. Parks, and gardens lead to interesting alleys and lanes, while distinguished Georgian houses climb the hills. The city docks have been restored, with dockside warehouses being converted into houses, offices, shops, art galleries, and cinemas. The harbor is full of pleasure craft but still has "tall ships" moored there occasionally.
The arts flourish with opera, film, ballet, theater, music of every kind, and art galleries ranging from the classical to the avant garde. On sunny afternoons you can watch cricket at the County Ground, sail in the harbor, go caving or rock climbing outside of Bristol, or visit the Cotswolds, the historic city of Bath, or Stonehenge. You also can spend fascinating hours wandering around the narrow streets of the old city, browsing among the stalls of St. Nicholas market or exploring the shops of Clifton Village where the university is located. London, with its museums, art galleries, shops, theaters, monuments and public buildings, is a great day trip or weekend destination.
