Mikkeli Polytechnic has 4500 students on its three campuses in Savonlinna, Pieksämäki, and Mikkeli.

Mikkeli---Established in 1838 by Czar Nicholas I. The town of Mikkeli is situated by the shore of Lake Saimaa, about 21/2 hours northeast of Helsinki by car. There are 700 lakes and ponds in the vicinity and therefore water is an important feature of everyday resident life. The food and printing industries are the largest employers in the region, and approximately 33,000 people live in Mikkeli today. There are many festivals and events held in Mikkeli throughout the year, including the Traditional March Fair, Giant Jumble Sale, Mil-Jazz Happening, Children's Carneval, Mikkeli Music Festival, Kesti-Festi, Otava Happy Jazz, Marski Cup (ice hockey), The Night of Arts, and Ecological Produce Fairs. There are many recreational activities available for students in Mikkeli-- bodybuilding, bowling, canoeing, cycling, dancing, football, golf, music, horseback riding, skiing, squash, swimming, and tennis. Approximately 3,000 students attend the MP Mikkeli campus.

Savonlinna---The town of Savonlinna, built on a chain of islands, was a popular spa and tourist destination in the 19th century. The town was built around the Olavinlinna Castle, a massive fortress built in 1475 to defend Sweden's western border (Finland was incorporated into Sweden at that time). It is 210 miles northeast of Helsinki.

Today Savonlinna has 29,000 residents and it is well known for its international opera festival and market-place. The wooden church in the nearby town of Kerimaki is the largest in the world. Savonlinna is a lively student town and offers a number of sporting and other activities throughout the year including slalom skiing, ski jumping, skating, ice hockey, swimming, bowling, shooting, jogging, tennis, riding, rowing, and rumbling. Approximately 800 students attend the MP Savonlinna campus.

Pieksamaki---Pieksamaki is 206 miles north of Helsinki, in a region of high moraine hills that were settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. It is in the heart of the Central Savo region of Finland, and Lake Pieksamaki reaches into the center of town. The School of Forestry in Pieksamaki was founded in 1905, making it one of the oldest such institutions in Finland. It is located 2 1/2 miles outside of Pieksamaki between 3 beautiful lakes. The school has 200 students, and because of its small size, students and faculty are one big family.
