Description

UGA Costa Rica offers 19 study abroad programs in many disciplines, including interdisciplinary spring and fall semester programs with a minimum of 12 hours and a maximum of 18 hours credit. We offer core courses in the sciences and humanities (a mix of courses in Anthropology, Biology, Dance, Ecology, English, Geography, Geology, History, Sociology, Spanish). Programs also run at May 15- June 4 and Summer sessions (June - August). These programs include Art (painting, drawing, and photography), Spanish and History, Entomology, Landscape Architecture, Tropical Agroecology, Ecology, and Environmental Writing. Many programs include homestays with local families. Programs are open to undergraduate and graduate students. Out of state students pay in-state Georgia tuition plus program fees.

Internships are available for resident naturalists who lead birdwatching tours, night hikes, natural history walks, giving of presentations to tourist visitors on campus and assists translation during local field trips.

TESOL certificate program for UGA and non-UGA undergraduate and graduate students include 2 courses (6 credit hours) and instruction time in local schools (K-12) in the Monteverde region and one on-line course (3 credit hours) run by UGA in Athens. All courses taught by UGA professors.

Highlights

UGA owns a 160-acre property in San Luis de Monteverde that borders the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve. This is UGA's Costa Rican campus, a full-service education and research facility, with student and faculty residential areas, classrooms, wet laboratory, library and internet facility, kitchen and dining hall, student union, miles of hiking trails, UGA also features San Luis Botanical Garden which is established and directed by the curator of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. There are also horse stables, an organic farming operation, and more. Over 200 UGA students and some 450 non-UGA students participate in study abroad programs annually. Graduate researchers are also welcome.
