Description

UBELONG Expeditions delve into international development issues through fieldwork and service learning activities. For two weeks participants join a tightly knit team of eight to ten people guided by two Expedition Leaders, leading development professionals.

Genocide in Perspective, UBELONG Expedition

Join a group of 8 to 10 people for a life changing ten day journey during which you travel with UBELONG Expedition Leaders Raul Roman and Cedric Hodgeman to learn about international development issues. Raul is a professor of international development at Johns Hopkins and Cornell Universities and Cedric is leading social entrepreneur who has worked on grassroots projects throughout the world.

The Expedition explores the legacy of the Khmer Rouge regime and how the consequences of the genocide are linked to different socioeconomic challenges that persist in Cambodia today. Expedition participants delve into the history of the Khmer Rouge and study its continued effects on a broad range of areas, including civil society, education, health, human rights and sex trafficking.

Participants interact with various local actors, including human rights lawyers working on the Khmer Rouge Trial, entrepreneurs, representatives of community development organizations and foreign aid workers. They study and document relevant cases, identify opportunities and challenges in current poverty alleviation efforts, and gain a deep understanding of the local context. Expedition participants also contribute directly to local development efforts by volunteering on community projects. The Expedition focuses on the capital, Phnom Penh, and includes visits to small communities on the outskirts. Participants also enjoy recreational activities, including a visit to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.
