Description

A professional residency & conservatory training program, the RITL consists of theatre artists from around the world who are willing to share their culture, knowledge, and experience. Primarily based each summer in Smolyan, Bulgaria (located just north of the border with Greece), participants live and work in the center of the breathtaking Rhodopi Mountains the mythological birthplace of Orpheus & Eurydice and an original terrain of the cult of Dionysus, i.e., a significant origin of Western drama, music, and performance. Assembling at a geographical root of storytelling and their art form, theater-makers internationalize their imaginations, broaden the scope of their creative vocabularies, and collectively discover how diverse conventions, narratives, and philosophies may be merged into uniquely cohesive theatrical events. Each RITL session includes travel throughout this historically rich region, and concludes with performances of numerous works-in-progress at the Rhodopi Dramatichen Theatre in Smolyan and the Dramatichen Theatre in Plovdiv, a major cultural and historical center at the foot of the Rhodopi Mountains. The 2012 schedule will explore its impetuses at sites throughout Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria.

Highlights

Members of the RITL take part in trips to significant points of interest throughout the region. Each summer, these excursions vary, depending on the general subject, schedule of workshops, and the calendars of nearby festivals. (The 2012 schedule will explore its impetuses at sites throughout Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria.)
