Description

The winter programme provides students with a unique opportunity to learn and think about major global challenges and how these are being addressed by the international community. Special attention will be paid to the role of the United Nations as a tool of global governance.

Emphasis on role-playing and social events also enables students to experience multiculturalism and global diversity firsthand. Students will gain knowledge of international challenges and build confidence to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Highlights

Through academic lectures and direct interaction with negotiators and practitioners from international organizations, participants acquire a clear sense of the core mission of the UN as well as develop critical analysis of future challenges in international relations.

The winter programme explores concepts and key issues of peace and security, human rights and humanitarian challenges, international development, North-South relations and the future of global governance.

The programme includes :

Morning lectures
* Interdisciplinary approach to challenges of governance with internationally-renowned professors
Afternoon workshops
* In-depth and small-group study of selected issues
Visits to international organizations in Geneva
* Dialogue with high-level officials from international organizations
Model United Nations
* Conference simulation where students are transformed into diplomats/government officials and learn how to negotiate

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies's Mission Statement

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is a result of the merger of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED), created respectively in 1927 and 1961. It is an institution dedicated to providing students from all over the world the means to undertake international studies, from a historical, legal, economic, political and social perspective.
