Description
As the second most populous city in Australia with 3.5 million people, Melbourne is regarded as one of the world's most livable cities. As Australia's cultural, culinary, education and sporting capital, the city features a thriving multicultural atmosphere and an abundance of quirky neighborhoods to explore. Just as the city has something to offer for everyone, campus life at the University of Melbourne is exciting and vibrant. The University's various campuses feature more than 47,000 students, including more than 12,000 international students from over 120 nationalities.
The University is a large research-intensive and comprehensive institution, offering courses from 11 faculties: Architecture, Building & Planning, Arts, Economics & Commerce, Education, Engineering, Land & Environment, Law, Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences, Science, Veterinary Science, Victorian College of the Arts & Music, and a School of Graduate Research for Masters and PhD programs. In 2008 the University introduced the Melbourne Model for teaching and learning - a far-reaching curriculum reform aimed at creating an outstanding and distinctive 'Melbourne Experience' for all students. The revised curriculum includes fascinating new University wide breadth subjects available to students in all courses, centered on preparing graduates with globally engaged attributes. This model is not dissimilar to the general education requirements in the US system, but is unique in its nature and the first of its kind in Australia. The University's Victorian College of the Arts and Music specializes in visual and performing arts and is situated in the heart of the Melbourne city arts precinct, separate from the University's Parkville campus.
Highlights
The Education Abroad Network - Study Australia program includes a 5-day group orientation (for most of our sites), guaranteed, fully furnished, and prearranged housing for your entire stay abroad, a Resident Director and more.
The University's main Parkville campus is next to the inner-city suburb of Carlton and only a short walk from Lygon Street - the city's Italian quarter, a tram ride to the city center, and close to bohemian Brunswick Street. With many of the city's special neighborhoods within walking distance and the others easily accessible via public transportation, the university boasts an ideal location close to everything the city has to offer. Take advantage of galleries, cafes, and a variety of shops and food outlets as you get to know both your university and your home-away-from-home.
Take advantage of the University of Melbourne's many on-campus activities to meet new friends and enrich your time in Australia. The University's Student Union provides a wide range of services and clubs, including a Star Trek Club, Chocolate Lover's Society, and a Magician's Society along with the University's Study Abroad Club MUSEx, run by local Australian students who provide extra-curricular activities each semester for visiting students. The Union also hosts numerous events including film festivals, trivia nights, and band competitions.
Or if you would rather sweat it out with other students, take part in some of the outstanding sport and recreation services offered by Melbourne University Sport. With access to group fitness classes and over 40 sporting clubs, including Surf Riding, Mountaineering, Ultimate Frisbee, and football, you're sure to find something you enjoy.
