Description

In this course, we will examine New Zealand's history, culture, political and social systems, natural environment, and their impact on leisure values and choices. Explores how nature and culture create and transforms individual experiences. This program will Involve traveling through the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Experiencing fjords, glaciers, caves, mountains, geothermal areas and cultural events while applying experiences to directed coursework.

Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- Understand how culture creates and transforms individual experiences, everyday community life, and social relations
- Identify comparisons between US and NZ leisure in the context of the leisure lifestyle focusing on attitudes, values, behaviors, resources and experiences
- Understand the historical events and indigenous people, Maori, that impact New Zealand's values and customs and the role of women within the culture
- Learn about the unique flora and fauna of New Zealand and its strong ecological efforts to preserve the environment
- Learn about and experience the geological and geographical features of a remote South Pacific region
- Learn about the Arts and architecture that are unique to New Zealand
- Learn about the way of life, horticulture and economic systems in New Zealand
- Understand the societal and cultural factors that impact sports, recreation, leisure and the national park system in New Zealand
- Learn about political systems in New Zealand and alternative approaches to promote social justice for women, immigrants, native people (Maori), and other minority groups and social equity including health care
- Promote cultural competence though interacting with individuals from a different culture
- Enhance the ability to make observation, analyze situations and form a perspective using critical thinking skills and document finding effectively
