General English language courses at International House New York focus on learning through communication and practicing real-life English both in and out of the classroom. We believe in an integrated approach to language learning, incorporating speaking, writing, reading, listening, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary into every lesson with particular emphasis on practicing language in depth through conversation.

Communication is the key to learning and using English well. Therefore, our classes focus strongly on developing students' communication skills in all areas and learn useful English.

Fun and practical usage are also highly important, which is why our 20-lesson-a-week program includes a weekly elective classes focusing on English in New York, whether this involves learning English through studying current news items, the history of New York or through Broadway theater. Students choose to study with IH New York because they want to learn English and have a great New York experience. And with our New York themed lessons we bring this experience alive by bringing New York into the classroom!

For students who want to supplement their English Language Studies with private tuition to accelerate their progress, we also offer Private One-to-One Classes. You can choose to study privately with an experienced and highly qualified teacher for as few or as many hours as you need.

We offer five levels of General English Classes: Beginner, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced English.

As a student at IH New York, you can attend classes from 1 week to as many weeks as you would like. The maximum number of students per class is just 14 - all our classes sizes are small - and the minimum age for the courses is 18. English Courses are 20 lessons per week, and you can combine classroom tuition with Private One-to-One Lessons. Each of our Intensive 20 Courses is 18 Teaching Hours (a Teaching Hour is 50 minutes long) in length.
