Description
Tallinn University was established on 18 March 2005 as the result of a merger of several universities and research institutes in Tallinn as well as the Estonian Academic Library. Its main strengths lie in the fields of humanities and social sciences, but it also has a strong and constantly growing component of natural and exact sciences, as well as a notable tradition of teacher training and educational research.
The University consists of 19 institutes (Estonian Institute for Future Studies, Estonian Institute for Population Studies, Estonian Institute of Humanities, Institute of Communication, Institute of Ecology, Institute of Educational Sciences, Institute of Estonian Language and Culture, Institute of Fine Arts, Institute of Germanic and Romance Languages and Cultures, Institute of Health Sciences and Sports, Institute of History, Institute of Informatics, Institute of Information Studies, Institute of International and Social Studies, Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute of Political Science and Governance, Institute of Psychology, Institute of Slavonic Languages and Cultures, Institute of Social Work) and 5 colleges (Baltic Film and Media School, Catherine's College, Tallinn University Law School and two regional colleges). At present, it has around 9200 students as well as more than 500 faculty members and research fellows.
The University has committed itself to the strategic goal of becoming an international research university with a strong social conscience and a flexible and collegial environment for learning and personal growth, where considerable academic freedoms guaranteed to both the students and the faculty are balanced by strict quality requirements. One of the main aims of the university is large-scale internationalization - with its 14 academic degree programmes and a number of shorter programmes and courses offered in the English language it is already one of the the most international universities in the Baltic area, but this number will, according to our plans, increase significantly over the next few years. Many academic positions in the university are announced for international application and the University is glad to host international visiting scholars on their sabbatical leaves or by other agreements.
The summer schools of the university, organized independently or jointly with our international partners, have already achieved a notable reputation, and the university currently maintains 37 inter-university agreements with universities in Europe, US, Japan, Russia and several other countries as well 440 Erasmus exchange agreements with universities from all over the European Union.
