Description

China's recent emergence on the world economic stage and the resulting building frenzy have spurred interest and controversy among Western planners and architects. On the wave of mammoth urban projects and new monumental buildings, increasing numbers of young architects schooled in the West are launching on their careers in this exotic setting. New work in China has produced the most compelling new books on architecture and the city, and many of the decade's most discussed buildings and projects.

Highlights

With one of the richest cultural traditions in the world and a compelling history as a modern nation, China presents a unique forum to study a key condition of contemporary life as it pertains to design issues: the collision between modern architecture and urbanism and traditional and historic fabric. This course examines the three most dynamic cities in the country for the study of urban form, city building, and architecture. Hong Kong's modernity and lack of a historic infrastructure set a precedent for super-modernity. But it is fast being outpaced by the building campaigns in Beijing and Shanghai. You will be confronted with these profound shifts and explore their implications for society and culture in China.
