Description

From its diverse immigrant organization of the late nineteenth century through the populist Peronismo decades to the late twentieth-century military regime in which tens of thousands lost their lives, Argentine history is replete with heroic struggles against impunity, economic disenfranchisement and social exclusion. The twenty-first century continues this pattern; since the country's recent economic crisis, a variety of social movements have worked toward creating new means of achieving economic advancement along with social justice.

The vibrant city of Buenos Aires, home to many Argentine activist groups and human rights organizations, will be the program headquarters. From the capital, you will travel the length and breadth of the nation, visiting with social activists, local scholars, indigenous leaders, environmental advocates, rural organizers and others who will share their struggles, hopes and dreams for their community, nation and world.

Prerequisites: Previous college-level coursework and/or other significant preparation in social work, political economy, development studies, or Latin American studies, as assessed by SIT. Three recent semesters of college -level Spanish or equivalent and the ability to follow coursework in Spanish, as assessed by SIT.
