Description

A journal is an act of faith, a commitment to record thoughts and observations. To travel is to embark on an adventure. This class proposes to combine the two and encourages the artist to understand the importance and (paradoxically) the liberating joy of working in a disciplined, diarist-manner. It will require the daily practice of keeping a visual journal / sketchbook / diary by drawing on location as well as a finished series of mixed media "Journal Works". These pieces will utilize the sketchbook drawings as reference as well as ephemera collected through our travels - stamps, stickers, ticket stubs, menu's, napkins, magazine and newspaper clippings, photographs, etc. - creating a mixed media journal piece for each working day of this course.

With this class drawing, art making and sightseeing (even shopping!) will be a seamless experience. It is open to highly motivated students/participants of all levels who are interested in working from observation as well as journal keeping. All applicants must submit a portfolio. Some required reading and writing. A full supply list and explanation of the journal project will be given prior to departure.

Highlights

The class is structured to examine the connection between the fall of Byzantium, the expulsion of the Byzantine scholars to Italy, and how their books and knowledge fueled the renaissance in Florence. Istanbul's Byzantine monuments and artifacts will be carefully examined; this class will also introduce the participants to the contemporary art museums and galleries as well as to the great monuments and historic sites of the city.

Daily drawing from observation will be combined with an investigation of all the city offers - from the Spice Market Bazaar to the waterside cafe of the Istanbul Modern. We will have a full day in a studio in Istanbul for a crit of works produced in Istanbul and a "marathon" drawing assignment.
