Description

Spend a semester, year or summer exploring Greek culture while completing an internship, taking classes toward your degree or engaging in service learning activities on the beautiful campus of the American Farm School in northern Greece.

Living alongside Perrotis College's international student body, study abroad participants from a wide range of majors can choose from a number of undergraduate courses, all of which are taught in the English language. Aside from the Greek Cultural Experience class, course offerings typically include The Greek Palate: Greek & Mediterranean Cuisine, From Zeus to Byzantium: Greek Mythology & the Early Christian Legacy, Introduction to the European Union, Marketing Management, Agrotourism Principles & Practices, Precision Agriculture & Environmental Sustainability and others, depending on student interest.

Internships can be arranged through the Perrotis College internship program (SSIP) or as part of the study abroad Service Learning course. SSIP Interns typically work 30-40 hours per week, alongside regular AFS staff, in paid and unpaid positions on the AFS model farm, which includes a new educational dairy (where we produce what is considered the best milk in Greece), a poultry unit, a vineyard and winery, olive trees, greenhouses and field crops. Internships (paid and unpaid) are also available in other AFS departments, - including positions that involve research projects.

Service Learning projects, usually 10-15 hours per week, can also be carried out on the AFS Farm, or by providing English tutoring or doing volunteer work for local charities, NGOs or ecologically-oriented organizations.

Students live in the international residence hall, on the beautiful campus of the American Farm School, located about 20 minutes east of the Thessaloniki city center.

Travel and cultural learning are considered to be essential elements of the study abroad experience. On weekends and breaks, students are encouraged to explore the many faces of Greece--by living with Greek families on a homestay, sailing to a Greek island on a four-day sailing trip, participating in the program's other organized trips and excursions, or venturing out on their own to nearby places of interest.

Qualifications

Students interested in the program must complete an application in which they show an interest in exploring Greek and other cultures and demonstrate that they will be active in all aspects of the program. Participants must possess good English language communication skills, be at least 18 years of age, and be a student in good (academic) standing at a post-secondary institution.
