Description

Prague resonates with the culture of Europe, past and present. Home to prolific writers, artists, and musicians including Kafka, Mucha, Kundera, Mozart, Dvorák, and Smetana, Prague's many cafés, art galleries, music festivals, and theatres draw international performances and audiences. The NYU Prague academic center is located in two 15th-century buildings only steps away from the Old Town Square, considered the heart of the city, where some of the finest examples of Prague's architectural accomplishments, including Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, and art nouveau styles, can be observed. The NYU Prague curriculum introduces students to the historical, political, social, and cultural heritage of the Czech Republic, and it helps them understand its role in a changing Europe and appreciate the complex economic and political issues influencing the relationship between Eastern and Western Europe. All courses are taught in English, and students also have the opportunity to take language courses in Czech, German, Polish, or Russian.

Highlights

A full-time student affairs staff plans numerous events and activities for students to become familiar with their new city in their first few weeks. Students visit such institutions as the Czech Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, and Radio Free Europe in order to experience firsthand life after the Velvet Revolution, led by former president Václav Havel. Several field trips are also organized each semester so that students can explore the historic countryside. Outside of Prague, in nearby villages and towns, students discover the medieval architecture and musical heritage of Bohemia and Moravia. Students travel to medieval cities such as Cesky Krumlov, to the historic spa known as Karlovy Vary, and to the vineyards and farms of the region. In addition, weekend excursions may be organized to cities such as Budapest and Berlin. Internships and community service opportunities are available.
