Description

The Miami University spring program in Oviedo (Spain) offers classes for all majors/minors up to 16 credits, including two Global Miami Plan courses. Students are immersed in Spanish culture living with host families and also enroll in a 1-credit cultural trip around Spain led by Miami faculty (included in the program fees). Internships in education and business are also available.

During mid March, students will travel from Oviedo to several cities in Spain that are crucial to understand Spanish history and the role that different civilizations (specifically, Christian, Muslim and Jew) have had in the making of contemporary Spain. Students will also be exposed to artistic and architectural manifestations of several periods in Spanish history (from Roman times to the present) that are critical to understand the topics and works covered in the courses students take in Oviedo. Finally, students will be exposed to the variety of climates, customs, and culinary traditions of Spain, thus increasing their cultural awareness and their ability to see through stereotypes and generalizations. Cities include Salamanca, Valencia, Mérida, Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada, Toledo, and Madrid.

In Mid February, students will make a long-weekend trip to Barcelona (by train), also led by Miami faculty. They will be able to visit architectural milestones of international significance and discover another example of the cultural and linguistic variety of Spain.
