Description
Kingston University is located in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames on the edge of London and the Surrey countryside. The town is on the river Thames, a 25 minute train ride from central London.
The Study Abroad Programme welcomes applications from current undergraduate students who wish to spend a semester or academic year studying abroad as part of their degree course. Kingston offers a wide range of subject areas.
All UK universities are subject to independent assessments of their teaching quality, and all the Kingston University departments assessed so far have been given either full or near full marks, or an equivalent 'Excellent' rating. This enviable record ranks us alongside some of the most prestigious UK universities for teaching quality.
The town is large enough to offer an impressive range of services and entertainment, yet small enough to avoid the anonymity of a big city. Most students live a short walk or bus journey from the centre and take full advantage of its attractions. Living so close to central London means you can also enjoy the capital's wide range of cultural activities and entertainment.
Highlights
One of the benefits of the Kingston programme is that students take classes with the regular student body giving them the opportunity to integrate fully with academic and student life at the university. Students pick classes - from six of the Faculties (departmental groupings) at the University: Business and Law; Art, Design & Architecture; Arts and Social Sciences (Liberal Arts), which also includes the School of Education; Science; Engineering; Computing, Information Systems and Mathematics.
Most students take the module "British Life and Culture" (3 US credits), which is arranged at times which normally do not clash with other courses. It is designed to help students gain optimum benefit from their study abroad experience and become aware of British culture in its many aspects. Lectures are given on various aspects of British life, culture and history followed by guided field-trips to places of special interest including Brighton, Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a London theatre show, and the Houses of Parliament.
The Study Abroad Office at Kingston University assists in arranging housing accommodations for students in the Kingston community. While at KU, students are automatically granted membership in the Student Union, which plays an important role in promoting and developing students' interests. The Commercial Services of the Student Union include four bars, a wide range of entertainment, two stationary shops, and a travel agency. Sports clubs compete in intramural and intercollegiate matches in rugby, soccer, cricket, rowing, and swimming. A fully equipped fitness center at Penrhyn Road has cardiovascular equipment, weight training machines, and aerobic studios. Additionally there are over 60 clubs and societies which visiting students can join.
