Description
As the world's second most populous country and home of some of the oldest civilizations in human history, India has recently gained recognition as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. India is also one of the most diverse countries on the planet, with well over 100 languages spoken throughout its 28 states and 7 territories.
ISA's programs in India provide students the opportunity to learn about this country's history as well as experience modern life in the world's largest democracy. Whether they are studying Hindi or taking courses in English alongside Indian students, participants will learn about themselves as they experience the world's most syncretic culture.
Location
South Asia, with Pakistan bordering on the Northwest and Nepal, China and Bangladesh to the Northeast. There are three major bodies of water on the three sides of the peninsula: the Arabian Sea to the west, the Indian Ocean to the south and the Bay of Bengal to the east.
Climate
India has both massive deserts and towering mountains, the combination of which gives the world's seventh largest country by size an incredibly varied climate. Southern India is mostly tropical and dry, with the exception of a torrential monsoon season, while northern India is more temperate and dry.
Highlights
Hyderabad (pop. 4,068,611) is India's sixth largest city and is one of the major center of information technology in the country, which has earned it the nickname "Cyberabad". It is located in the center of the country and so has moderately high temperatures year-round.
Hyderabad was founded about 500 years ago, but despite its short history, the city still contains some of India's most treasured historic sites, such as the Charminar and Golcanda Fort. The city has always had a high Muslim population and this has created a unique culture in both the city and among the worldwide community of "Hyderabad Muslims".
Thanks in large part to the recent technology boom in the city, Hyderabad has grown very quickly. This has caused a noticeable, but amicable, divide between the new, IT-focused city and the traditional Old City, with its closely held and longstanding cultural values. Participants on this program will experience both sides of the city, as well as the more common mixing of these cultures.
