Description

The People's Republic of China has been a center of international attention for the past 15 years as it has emerged as a global economic power. China has the world's highest population with more than 1.3 billion people, and is the second largest country in the world with respect to land area. Due to such a large population and land size, China has immense cultural and geographic diversity within its borders. Chinese history can be traced back thousands of years, making ancient China one of the world's oldest civilizations.

ISA's China program allows students the ability to learn Mandarin, the world's most widely spoken language in one of the world's fastest growing economies. Students will be immersed linguistically while having the opportunity to experience Chinese culture first-hand.

Location:

East Asia, with the Pacific Ocean on its east coast, Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan to the north, Pakistan and Afghanistan to the west, and India, Myanmar, and Vietnam to the south.
Climate

Being one of the largest countries in the world, China has a varied climate, ranging from vast arid deserts to a mountainous subarctic north. China has the 3rd largest river in the world (The Yangtze) and the highest point on Earth (Mount Everest). There are beautiful sandy beaches and rolling green hills. Most areas of the country are temperate, experiencing all four seasons in moderation, and rainfall in most parts of the country is considerably less common than the countries neighboring China to the south.

Highlights

Beijing is China's capital city and stands as its most culturally-rich and historically significant city in China. It has been the capital city throughout Chinese history and thus has enjoyed a particularly privileged place in the cultural memory of the Chinese people. As the seat of political power, Beijing has much to offer in understanding China's significance and power within the global arena. As the second largest city in China, next to Shanghai, the population of close to 17 million people will astound every traveler with its "hutongs" (narrow alleyways) signaling Beijing's long history and its broad boulevards which convey the modern developments of the city. Beijing is made up of 16 districts and patterned in concentric ring roads. Within the innermost ring road travelers will find the four districts where most of the main historical sights can be found.

Xicheng: Northwestern district includes Beihai Park, the Houhai area, Beijing Zoo and National Concert Hall.

Dongcheng: Northeastern district includes the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and Beijing Central Station.

Xianwu: Southwestern district

Chongwen: Southeastern district includes the Temple of Heaven.

There is no shortage of historical places to go and cultural sites to visit in Beijing!

Region and Population

Beijing is situated in the northeastern part of China, surrounded by mountains to its north, northwest and west which provided protection from warring tribes during the time that the Great Wall was built. Along with its secure placement it is unique in that unlike most cities Beijing is not located on a river or large body of water. Because of its location on the plains of China, Beijing has dry and windy winters, while its summers are hot and humid. During the Spring, like most other parts of Asia, the sandstorms from the Mongolian Gobi desert make their way into the city.

As the second largest city in China, Beijing is expanding rapidly and boasts a population of around 20 million people.
