Cape Town is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a backdrop of flat-topped Table Mountain juxtaposed by the sweep of the Atlantic Ocean in the foreground. You can hike or take a cable-car ride up Table Mountain to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city and peninsula, take a ferry to the historic Robben Island, or visit the Cape of Good Hope. There are magnificent beaches to be enjoyed as well as cosmopolitan city shops and market areas. Cape Town offers a unique introduction to Africa, a changing landscape of multicultural contrasts and communities. The city has a well-developed infrastructure and a richly diverse population of roughly three million people. It is a meeting place for people of many religions, colors, languages and diverse traditions. The challenge provided by one city, many cultures opens up experiences and opportunities for the thoughtful student.
Highlights
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa's oldest university and one of the continent's leading teaching and research institutions. UCT has six faculties, over 60 departments and offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate study. The main teaching campus, known as the Upper Campus, is located on the slopes of Devil's Peak and contains, in a relatively compact site, the faculties of Science, Engineering, Commerce, and Humanities (except for the arts departments). Upper Campus is centered on UCT's iconic Jameson Hall, the location for graduation and other ceremonial events, as well as many examinations. Upper Campus is also home to the Chancellor Oppenheimer library, which holds the majority of the University's 1.3 million volume collection.
The academic departments of UCT are divided into six faculties: Commerce, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, and Science. The multidisciplinary Center for Higher Education Development rates on a level equal to the faculties. You may select courses from a wide range of departmental offerings across the majority of UCT faculties. As scheduling allows you can combine courses offered in different departments and faculties. You will typically select the majority of your courses at the 200-level, although a 100 or 300-level course may be taken as well.
As a fully registered undergraduate student of UCT, you will have access to over 100 student clubs and societies appealing to almost every interest. UCT has an abundance of sports clubs, including team sports, individual sports, extreme sports, and martial arts. You can choose from traditional sports or more diverse pursuits such as archery, hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, skydiving, surfing, and water skiing. In addition to the many student societies, there are several campus organizations dedicated to serving the communities surrounding the University in the Cape Metropolitan Area. Since UCT housing is not available to international students, you will have a single room and live with other Interstudy students in shared, self-catered apartments within walking distance of campus.
