Description

Since 1950, IES Abroad has been building quality study abroad programs and introducing U.S. students to new places, studies, and ways of thinking. A non-profit educational organization, IES Abroad offers high academic standards and extensive financial aid in almost 80 programs throughout the world.

The IES Abroad Berlin Metropolitan Studies Program uses Berlin as a case study to examine the issues relevant to major cities today. Through English-taught comparative and interdisciplinary courses, you will study topics such as Architecture, Cultural Identity, the European Union, Gender and Sexual Politics, Multiculturalism, Popular Culture, and Urban Studies. Courses focus on Central Europe, but include comparisons to metropolises in Western and Eastern Europe and the United States. A research seminar allows you to pursue additional academic research in Metropolitan Studies for credit.

A unique highlight of the program is its experiential component. Field study trips to Paris, France and St. Petersburg, Russia provide a first-hand comparative context for study. In addition, you will experience the streets, neighborhoods, and architecture of Berlin, and learn by interacting with the local environment.
Previous German language study is not required.
