Description

Students across the social sciences seeking an English-language program in a non-traditional setting are invited to enroll in the 'Scandinavian Urban Studies Term' Fall semester program, based in Oslo, Norway. The SUST program explores the social welfare state in Norway and other Scandinavian countries, how it has developed, how society's needs are addressed, and challenges for the future. Courses, taught in English, are interconnected and include focus on sustainable development, global issues, art and literature. Students may also choose either intensive Norwegian language study or an Independent Study Project. Housing is in a student village near the University of Oslo campus.

Questions that guide analysis and exploration throughout the program are:
* How has national identity in Norway been shaped and reflected by art, film, literature and social movements?
* How have art, film, literature and social movements reproduced and/or challenged conventional understandings of what it means to be Norwegian?
* What are the contemporary challenges and opportunities for the Scandinavian welfare states in general and the Norwegian social democracy in particular?
* How does the form of a welfare state relate to its ability to foster a multicultural society?
* How might the Scandinavian welfare states adapt to the challenges of multiculturalism, European integration and globalization?

Highlights

While the bulk of the program-- including class meetings at the University of Oslo, internship placements and numerous field excursions throughout the Capitol City- takes place in Norway, a nine-day field trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden, illuminates the similarities and differences among the Scandinavian states, particularly in their responses to globalization and migration. Students also participate in family-stays in outer, rural Norway for a long weekend. During this short time, students are able to see how immigration and globalization effect less metropolitan areas in new and different ways.
