While marble statues and ancient structures rise above the crowded streets, modern Romans dressed in the latest fashions speed over the cobblestones in their Fiat automobiles and Vespa scooters. This 2,000-year-old city has served as the heart of the Roman Empire, site of the Vatican, hub of world politics, and breeding ground for philosophical thought. As one of the few major European cities to escape the destruction of World War II, many ancient relics of the Eternal City remain standing today.
