Description

Cetamura is an archaeological site on a hilltop located in the Chianti Mountains of Tuscany, between Siena and Florence. Investigations at Cetamura have revealed an Etruscan sanctuary and artisans' quarter, Roman baths and a medieval fortified village. The rich stratigraphy and various types of artifacts in stone, terracotta, ceramics, metal and glass provide for a variety of excavation experiences.

The program features field trips to sites and museums that help to enrich the students' knowledge of the cultures under excavation at Cetamura. The program opens in Florence with visits to archaeological museums and sites that are relevant for the Roman past of Florence and the Etruscan periods at Fiesole just outside of Florence. A special introductory session on archaeological conservation will be sponsored by Studio Art Centers International (SACI) of Florence. Typical excursions also include an overnight trip to visit Etruscan tombs and museums at Orvieto, Tarquinia, and Cerveteri, as well as an excursion to the abbey of Badia a Coltibuono in Gaiole in Chianti, where finds from Cetamura are on display.
