Description

The Public Health program is designed for students exploring career opportunities in public health, either from a policy, sociology, or pre-med background. The core course and study tours offer you a Northern European perspective on salient aspects of public health, e.g. prevention, health promotion and quality improvement, an understanding of the challenges of health policy making, prioritization, and health economics, and the ability to derive comparative insight from analysis of different national health care systems.

Highlights

Denmark provides a laboratory for exploring public health issues much different from the US. Come see what these issues look like from a social welfare state with free health care and very high taxes. The program aims:

* To provide a Northern European perspective on the salient aspects of public health like pre-natal care, immunization, prevention, food safety, health promotion
* To help you understand the complex challenges of health policy making, prioritization, and health economics
* To advance your ability to derive comparative insights from analysis of different national health care systems
* To sensitize you to the political, social, economic, and moral issues involved in different models underlying modern health care systems.

The study tours, which are covered by the DIS tuition, form an integral part of the core course. Study tours will take you to Helsinki-Tallin or Riga-Helsinki (your choice). You will explore and compare public health systems in a Scandinavian and a former Communist country, and look at the very different challenges Europe will be facing due to rising costs, aging populations, immigration, etc.
