Description

If you are studying business and want to gain a global perspective on business and the business sector in India, the CIEE International Business & Culture study abroad program at the Welingkar Institute in Mumbai, India is for you. The program offers a number of business courses coupled with a required non-credit seminar focusing on current business trends, Indian culture, and intercultural training workshops.

Academic Program
Students are provided the exclusive opportunity to study various aspects of management, entrepreneurship, and business design in a direct enrollment environment with local Indian MBA-level students and a small number of other exchange students from the EU at Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research. CIEE students enroll in one 13-week academic term followed by two weeks of required corporate and cultural site visits which serve to supplement learning following the academic term.

After participating in coursework at Welingkar, students demonstrate deeper literacy about trends in the global marketplace and Indian markets; multi-cultural leadership skills as a result of taking part in various group projects with Indian peers; considerable familiarity and mastery of the business concepts and management techniques acquired in the classroom through successful exams, group project work, and final papers; and expertise on Mumbai's role in the global marketplace and national economy. In addition, students acquire the knowledge to discuss and interpret more complex case studies and business issues.

The Hindi I language course meets three times each week for one hour each session. Students in the Hindi I course are required to take an additional 20 hours of supplemental one-on-one language practice outside of the classroom to further enhance their understanding and use of Hindi in the context of Mumbai. Students who already have proficiency in spoken Hindi or Marathi are provided 20 hours of one-onone language practice. This allows students of all language backgrounds to develop new vocabulary and focus on topics that are of direct personal interest to their future career in global management or international business. After participating in the Hindi I course and/or meeting with local language partners, students communicate with Indian nationals in Hindi at a beginning level; read, write, and present information in Hindi with more fluency and confidence; and demonstrate a wider vocabulary range in Hindi.

Academic Culture
The learning pedagogy at Welingkar Institute includes lectures, discussions, case studies, interactive sessions, workshops, group projects, and industry assignments. Companies from various industries collaborate with Welingkar on course-based industry assignments and roundtables throughout each term. Welingkar also works with international companies across various industries for summer internships and hiring as well as with a growing number of entrepreneurial start ups and socially-minded businesses located in India.

The pedagogy at Welingkar is considered to be among one of the most innovative and student-centered business school curriculums in India today. The academic and intellectual environment is very demanding and requires students to be fully engaged in their courses and group project work that is an integral component of most courses.

The Hindi language courses are taught in both a task-based and communicative manner to ensure that students make the most of their language coursework while on the program.
