Description
The Business and Tourism program in Palma de Mallorca is designed for students with an academic interest in studying business, tourism, and/or hospitality alongside Spanish students in a direct enrollment environment, with a global perspective, and the goal to develop management skills for future leadership in the tourism and hospitality industry. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in an internship and to be exposed to a professional tourism work atmosphere in a foreign environment where they can apply the business vocabulary and skills gained in class in real-life professional situations.
What You'll Learn:
Students begin or further develop their Spanish language skills with a focus on tourism and business vocabulary. The program provides an opportunity for students to study business and tourism alongside Spanish students in a direct enrollment environment, with a global perspective, with the goal to develop management skills for future leadership in the tourism and hospitality industry. The CIEE content courses utilize the Balearic Islands as a laboratory where students explore the tourism and hospitality industry. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in an internship and to be exposed to a professional tourism work atmosphere in a foreign environment.
Academic Program:
The program is designed for tourism, hospitality and recreation management students as well as business students with interest in these areas. CIEE students are provided the opportunity to study various aspects of business, tourism and hospitality in a direct enrollment environment with local Spanish students and courses taught by CIEE faculty. CIEE courses include an important hands-on experience to observe first hand different companies and institutions dedicated to tourism.
Academic Culture:
The fall program begins in mid-September. All CIEE courses and the internship finish before the third week of December. UIB regular courses continue through mid- January with official final exams taking place through early February. UIB allows CIEE students to take early exams by the end of January for regular university courses and depart in early February. At the end of the fall semester, academic year students have a break for the late December and early January holidays. Students who are enrolled in University classes must be back in Palma in early January after the holiday break to continue their classes and take their final exams.
The spring program begins in early February. CIEE courses finish by the end of May. UIB classes run through mid-June with final exams through the end of June.
During the fall, there is no extended vacation period. During the spring, one vacation period takes place at the University: Semana Santa. While extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute to the student's experience, attendance in class is mandatory. Early departure for or late return from vacations is not allowed.
In some cases professors may be willing to administer the final exam even earlier(before Christmas in the fall and mid-June in the spring) but CIEE is not responsible for arranging or guaranteeing early exams. CIEE will be in contact with students prior to arrival to complete their registrations. At this point, students will find out which classes allow earlier final exams.
Classes meet two times a week, and are scheduled Monday through Friday. Most CIEE field study visits are scheduled on Fridays. Attendance is mandatory and absences affect final grades. CIEE classes provide a detailed syllabus, and students should expect daily homework assignments. University classes normally combine lectures, tutorials, seminars and study case classes. Spanish academic tradition involves more independent work on the part of the student, although there is a trend towards making courses more interactive. Typically, the syllabus includes an outline of the themes, a list of recommended readings, and grading criteria; no detailed calendar is usually provided.
