Description

The Reproductive Health program, organized by Child Family Health International (CFHI) gives students the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations that are focused on reproductive and women's health within the Ecuadorian capital of Quito. Students will be able to observe how reproductive healthcare functions in a socially conservative country where there is limited discussion and openness regarding sexual health issues. Students will also see first-hand how cultural attitudes toward gender equality often affect women's willingness and ability to seek treatment or even information about reproductive and sexual health.

Students in this program will experience Quito alongside students in the Andean Health in Quito program, although their clinical experiences will be more focused on reproductive health facilities. Clinical rotations will allow students to observe and/or assist doctors in a variety of capacities, whether it is assisting in a delivery or giving talks on reproductive health. Students will take medical and conversational Spanish classes at a language school in Quito. Cultural education continues outside of the classroom as well, through the home stay experience and interactions with medical staff during clinical rotations.

Many students take advantage of the variety of museums, historical sites, eye-opening weekend trips, and other attractions in and around the lively city of Quito during the evenings and weekends.

Clinical Rotations:
CFHI's rotations are designed to offer you clinical and observational experiences relevant to your level of medical education. The program includes the following educational aspects:

* Pre-trip orientation materials & web conference opportunities
* Orientation upon arrival, including cultural adjustment exercises
* Weekly meetings with Medical Director and Local Coordinator
* Clinical rotations Monday-Friday, working with a local physician who has opted to participate with CFHI as a teaching preceptor
* Information sessions that highlight the health care system in that country, common cases you will encounter and other site-specific information
* Post-trip debrief materials & other on-going alumni activities/services

Qualifications

This program is open to those 20 and over who possess:

* Minimal Spanish
* Conversant Spanish or
* Fluent Spanish
