Description

Don't just study English literature at the confines of the classroom. Study English literature right where Shakespeare and the English Renaissance started. Your London study program will be in the historic Globe Theater and will last for three weeks. The Globe Summer Program with AIFS gives students the cool chance to earn academic credits at the same time enriching a deeper understanding of English literature. Study under renowned and accomplished directors, actors, musicians, and designers where Shakespeare honed his craft. You could be the 21st century Shakespeare!

Lectures and seminars will be supplemented by movement and voice workshops, scene rehearsals, question and answer sessions with Company members, a visit to the Globe exhibition, a backstage tour and combat and sword play workshops. The program will focus on the material and cultural contexts for English Renaissance drama and theater and on the history and process of construction of both the original and the reconstructed Globe Theatre. Students will be required to develop critical responses to theatrical performances and will be required to perform in a short Shakespeare scene in order to examine and fully appreciate the relationship between dramatic language, physicality and theater space.

Highlights

Spend 3 weeks at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre where you will have the unique opportunity to study intensively with actors, directors and other theater practitioners on site in this remarkable location.

Central London is just outside your door when you are living in AIFS residence halls in South Kensington, steps from Kensington Palace, the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park. Hop on the Tube and visit Covent Garden, Camden Market (where you can buy vintage clothes and jewelry at a bargain) or Piccadilly Circus. See some of the world's finest works of art at the National Gallery and then watch the sunset at Trafalgar Square while listening to street musicians.

Earn 3 credits studying the works of Shakespeare and all aspects of theatrical performance. For a true London experience this summer, combine this program with 3 or 6 additional weeks on the London Traditional Program and earn an additional 3 or 6 credits. See page 44 for additional information.
