Russia: The Democracy and Theatre Project
Study new Russian theatre with Towson University in Russia next spring. Students will consider questions of democracy and post-democracy in the Russian cultural context while examining the new Russian performance aesthetics and playwriting. The majority of the program will be spent in Yekaterinberg, the center of the Russian New Drama Movement, meeting with artists to gain a sense of how new post-Soviet theatre work is being created outside of a major urban cultural center. Participants will collaborate with Yekaterinberg students on a work centered around post-democracy. The group will also travel to see a contemporary performance in Moscow.
